By Scott Colletti, The Paver Sealer Store
Paint overspray may sit on top of a coating, become lodged in texture or bond to the finish. Removing the paint while preserving the sealer requires a different assessment from stripping a failed sealer system.
Identify both coatings
Record the spilled or sprayed paint product and the existing paver finish if known. Note how long the overspray has been present and whether it is concentrated or widespread. Obtain current cleaning or removal instructions for those materials. A solvent that removes paint can also soften the sealer beneath it.
Start with a representative removal test
Select a discreet area with the same paint density and paver texture. Check both removal effectiveness and the dried finish afterward. Avoid hard scraping that cuts high points or pushes pigment into pores. If the paint dissolves but the coating becomes tacky, the method has not successfully preserved the original finish.
Define the repair boundary before expanding
If selective cleanup is unsuitable, consider whether broader stripping and resealing is needed to achieve a consistent result. Document the test and discuss expectations before treating the entire area. Do not promise invisible spot repairs. For removal product selection, confirm compatibility with the paint, sealer, paver material and nearby surfaces.
Before you proceed
- Identify the paint and existing sealer.
- Test removal and inspect the finish dry.
- Agree on the repair boundary before production cleanup.
Can I use a paint remover without affecting paver sealer?
Only a suitable test and product-specific guidance can support that conclusion. Many removal products affect more than one coating.
Connect this decision to the sealing system
Review the related planning guide before selecting a treatment. For film-forming options, compare UltraGloss SX and Ultra Seal Classic Gloss against the actual substrate, preparation and exposure. Product selection does not resolve structural, equipment or drainage problems. Use the Sealer Finder as a starting point, then confirm the current label, technical data and SDS.
For a removal assessment, review Melt Away Paint Stripper and confirm the correct process with product support.
