My garage is big enough to cover with the kit, though it’s worth noting that these kits can be purchased in varying sizes. If you have a larger garage and want to cover more surface area, Rust Oleum Rock Solid offers kits that are over twice as large, at 1,000 square feet and 2,000 square feet.

If your garage is smaller or if your floors aren’t as bad from rust and oil stains as mine were when I started this project then using less product might be fine for you.

Now that we have our boxes of kit, we need to start prepping our garage

  • Clean the floor by sweeping and vacuuming it.
  • Apply the concrete patching compound to any large holes or uneven areas on your floor, this will fill in cracks and prevent water from seeping into them. Use a putty knife to work it into cracks and crevices, but be sure not to apply too much, or else you’ll end up with a bumpy surface! Repeat until satisfied with the result. If you need help applying this product through your face mask, just ask someone who is good at it (like me).
  • Apply the filler over minor scratches and dents to smooth out any rough spots on your floor’s surface–this will make applying paint easier later on! Again using a putty knife or other smoothing tool of choice, spread on as needed while working until satisfied with the result (I did this job by myself so I didn’t need any help here).

In order to apply this kit successfully, you must mix all of your products in their individual bottles before you apply them to your garage floor.

I recommend doing this in a separate area without any dust or debris as well as using gloves and eye protection.

The first thing that needs to happen is mixing the base coat with the color coat together. The directions say that it’s important to do this with a stirring stick, but I found that it was easier just to stir it like one would in a cup of coffee. The next step is mixing the primer with the topcoat together and then continuing on with blending concrete patching compound and filler into a large bucket for easy cleanup later on down the road (I used about half).
