Part of the How to Seal Patio Pavers guide.
Path lights, recessed fixtures and illuminated step details create small but important boundaries in a paver-sealing job. Cleaner or sealer on a lens can affect appearance, while liquid entering a fixture assembly creates a different concern. Plan protection around the actual fixture instead of treating it as a metal object that can simply be rinsed afterward.
Inventory the fixtures in the work area
Photograph path lights, flush-mounted lights, wall and step fixtures, transformers, cable routes and control equipment near the paving. Identify manufacturer information when available. Record existing cracks, loose bases, damaged lenses or visible coating before work so the final inspection has a baseline.
Outdoor-rated equipment is not automatically compatible with every cleaning chemical, concentrated spray or coating. Check the exact fixture’s cleaning guidance and the proposed treatment’s compatibility with lens, finish, gasket and surrounding materials.
Coordinate electrical and fixture work separately
Arrange any isolation, removal, disconnection or repair with an appropriately qualified person following the fixture instructions. Do not open or modify wiring as an incidental part of sealing. Do not assume an unfamiliar fixture is low voltage, or that switching a timer off establishes every condition required for safe servicing.
Where a fixture needs covering, ensure that it cannot operate in an unsafe covered condition and that the protection method is appropriate. Keep the plan explicit so an automatic controller does not energize covered lights unexpectedly. Retain needed access to controls throughout the work.
Protect the lens and base differently
| Location | What to prevent |
|---|---|
| Lens or diffuser | Overspray, cleaner residue and abrasive contact |
| Decorative finish | Chemical attack or adhesive residue |
| Fixture base | Pooling around seals or mounting details |
| Cable route | Equipment contact or disturbance during edge work |
| Control equipment | Wash water and unplanned operation |
Use protection supported for the fixture and adjoining surfaces. Check whether tape can affect a painted or plated finish. Avoid forcing masking material into a seal or drainage feature. A barrier should contain the work without changing how the fixture assembly is intended to function.
Control cleaning near the fixture
Use a contained, surface-compatible process at the boundary. Keep concentrated wash jets away from fixture openings and unsupported electrical details. Recover cleaner and rinse material as planned instead of driving it under the base.
Kichler provides fixture-specific cleaning and care guidance, including gentle cleaning for landscape fixtures. The general lesson is to follow the actual fixture instructions rather than extending a paver-cleaning method onto lighting equipment. Products intended for lenses or decorative finishes still need to remain off a sealer when their compatibility is unknown.
Test coating termination around the base
Choose a representative fixture boundary for the approved application trial. Inspect whether the coating gathers against the base or crosses onto the fixture. Use an approved edge-application method and maintain the product’s coverage instructions. Do not bridge a seal, drainage opening or service joint with a thick coating line.
If accidental contact occurs, stop and obtain a compatible cleanup process before applying a solvent. Document which material reached the fixture, when it happened and whether it has cured. Rubbing an unknown film from a lens can create scratches or affect its surface.
Complete the handoff
Remove protection at the appropriate stage without dragging residue across new coating. Have any removed or isolated fixture work restored by the responsible qualified person. Compare the fixture and surrounding paving with the baseline photographs, and document any issue before normal use resumes.
The owner’s record should identify coating boundaries and separate future lighting care from paver care. That prevents a later lens-cleaning product or fixture replacement from becoming an unplanned sealer repair.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pressure wash an outdoor light because it is weather rated?
Do not assume that weather rating approves concentrated jets or cleaning chemicals. Follow the exact fixture's care and protection instructions.
Should the sealing crew disconnect lighting as part of preparation?
Any isolation, removal, wiring or repair must be handled by an appropriately qualified person under the fixture instructions.
