How to Apply Concrete Sealer

Whether you’re a professional contractor or a DIYer, how to apply concrete sealer will help extend its life and make it more beautiful. The application process is easy, but there are a few things to consider before getting started.

Initial Cleaning

After you have removed all of the loose dirt and debris from your concrete, it’s time to clean the surface to ensure that your sealer will bond properly. You should use a pressure washer to remove any grease, oil or other substances that may be present on your concrete. Be sure not to use too much pressure when cleaning with a pressure washer; this can damage your sealer’s ability to bond with the concrete.

You also want to use a broom and sweep over the entire surface before moving onto vacuuming up any remaining loose dirt and debris left behind by sweeping.

Application with Roller or Brush

  • Your first step is to prepare the concrete for sealing. If you have any cracks or chipped areas, fill them in with a concrete repair product and allow it to dry completely before continuing. This will ensure that your sealer protects the entire surface of your floor, not just the top layer. You can also use a power washer if you have one available, but be sure that you don’t leave any water standing on top of your floor once you’re done cleaning it; this can cause mold growth over time.
  • Once you’ve removed any debris from your floor and allowed it to dry thoroughly, roll out some masking tape along the edges of where you’d like your coatings applied—this way no spills will get outside their designated area while they’re drying!
  • Using either a roller or brush (or both), apply two coats of concrete sealant at least 24 hours apart (48 hours would be better).

Spray Application

  • Use a sprayer that will give an even coat of sealer: To ensure an even, smooth application, use a fan sprayer or other type of sprayer that distributes the sealer evenly and doesn’t leave any streaks behind.
  • Make sure your concrete sealer is mixed thoroughly before you start spraying: If you’re using a premixed product, make sure it’s been mixed thoroughly and that there aren’t any clumps in it before using it for spraying purposes.

Concrete Sealer Application Frequency

Concrete sealers need to be applied annually, or every two years in areas without heavy foot traffic. Sealing concrete is a good idea if you have a lot of moisture in the air and/or your concrete slab has a lot of foot traffic. However, sealing does not make your concrete waterproof. If your building is located near bodies of water (e.g., rivers or lakes), it’s best to consult with an expert who can advise on how often you should be sealing your floors.
